Summer is just around the corner. I’m sure some of you are starting to plan that epic summer vacation with your family and friends! Hot as it is, I love being in the water. Since I was in grade school, my cousins and I would always go to this beach called “Lazy A” in San Fabian.
Like every summer, we would get engaged in all kinds of water-based fun. We didn’t care if our skin gets toasted, or if our fingers become like prunes. All we know was that we’re happy coz we’re having fun. Below I narrowed down a selection of water sports you can try while in the Philippines.
Surfing
Surfing is one of my favorite water sports coz it’s a good cardiovascular exercise. I wrote an article on my other blog about the benefits of surfing. In the Philippines, there’s a lot of surfing spots like Siargao, Samar, Aurora, La Union, Zambales, Pagudpud, Quezon, etc. Try surfing so you’ll know the feeling of being “stoked”!
Sailing
Sailing feeds different souls in different ways. Why did I say that? Coz when you get in the sailboat, it automatically makes you feel good. It’s good for your physical, mental, and spiritual fitness.
Windsurfing
If you’re the type of person who has great endurance and burst of energy, this sport is perfect for you. It’s a good full-body workout that’s gonna require you to exert effort. You gotta work on more precise movements and reflexes while still falling in the water with more complex maneuvers. Where to try it? Anilao, Batangas, and Boracay.
Stand-up paddle boarding
This sport is pretty easy. All you have to do it to stand-up or kneel then paddle. Yes, it’s pretty easy unless there are big waves trying to rock you. I’ve tried it twice and I felt solitary. Like I’m so far from all the people at the beach and I’m just paddling and thinking about life.
Canoeing or Kayaking
It’s a low-impact activity so it’s perfect for everyone. Just one hour of kayaking can burn over 350 calories, depending on how hard you paddle of course. They said it uplifts mood and increases endorphin (positive hormones).
Snorkeling
This is good for breathing. It increases your maximal oxygen uptake by breathing in and out through the mouth. It improves overall health and endurance, burns 300 calories per hour, and helps reduce stress. In my experience, the best island to do it is in Panglao, Bohol, and El Nido, Palawan.
Scuba Diving
When you go underwater, you will feel that the surface of the ocean is like a foreign atmosphere above your head. You can see the waves upside down, the diffused yellow circle of the sun, and total silence. It’s like you’re in another space when scuba diving. I just love it.
Wakeboarding
Stability and balance are the foundation for wakeboarding, you gotta make sure that you have a strong core because that’s the main component of this sport. Good location for wakeboarding in the Philippines? There’s CWC (CamSur Watersports Complex), Nuvali in Laguna, Pradera, and Deca in Pampanga.
I’m sure there are more water sports you can try like flyboard (think of Ironman soaring up the sky), parasailing, fly fish, banana boat, etc. There are so many things to try! What kind of sports do you wanna try this summer? Have fun and be safe everyone! 🙂
