Nutrition is a massive part of your fitness journey. Too many people make the error of focusing on exercise without taking their nutrition into account. This either leads to no results or results that take a lot longer to see. In both situations, it can be really demotivating.
When you’re working out a lot, you need to refuel your body. Protein is a key nutrient to help your muscles recover and grow. So, here are a few high-protein snacks you can easily enjoy after your workouts to keep you going until lunch or dinner:
Hummus
Yes, hummus is technically a dip, but it makes for a really nutritious snack. Made from chickpeas, it’s very high in plant protein. All you have to do is find something to eat with it. This can vary depending on what mood you’re in. If you want to keep the calories low, try carrot sticks or cucumber with hummus. Those of you with low blood sugar could make some super easy pretzel bites to eat with them, providing an extra energy boost. Or, if you’re actually quite hungry and need more calories, opt for falafel.
Protein Bars
Nowadays, you can find all sorts of protein bars in most grocery stores – or gym vending machines. They’re designed to give you a big hit of protein after your workout, while also filling you up. If you don’t like the taste of protein bars, you could make some yourself at home. They can be made with or without protein powder depending on your preference. Carry a bar or two with you every day and you’ll always have a high-protein snack to enjoy whenever you need a boost.
Yogurt & Granola
Yogurt can be really high in protein, especially if you go for the Greek style. Adding some granola on top will give the snack an extra protein hit. At the same time, the extra substance adds more fiber to the snack, so it should fill you up for much longer. It’s perfect if you work out in the morning and need something that doubles up as breakfast. Or, if you have a long wait between your workout and the next meal.
Nuts
You can’t go wrong with a small portion of nuts as a snack. It’s surprising how filling and substantial a pack of nuts can be. Here, you have fiber, fat, and protein all rolled into one. Nuts will make you feel satisfied while adding a few extra grams of protein to your daily intake. A really good snack to have on the go, particularly if you’re hungry following a workout. Try to get nuts that aren’t overly salted or covered in anything else; they can sometimes be a bit too unhealthy.
Always remember to refuel following a workout. Protein shakes can be useful as little snacks, but a lot of people don’t like that. They stink, taste a bit weird, and you don’t always feel full after. Instead, try having some of the high-protein snacks listed above. They’ll fuel your muscle recovery and stop you from snacking on much worse things.
